7. River Aman Pontaman to Garnant

The river Aman is the main tributary of the loughor and like the Loughor is a hidden gem for those looking for good salmon, sea trout and brown trout fishing in Wales.The river from it’s source in the black Mountain to the Loughor estuary is only about 20 miles long with the club beat about 10 miles from the estuary. C.G.M.D. controls the majority of the fishing on the Amman, with most of the remainder being public fishing Our beat starts just outside Ammanford at Pontamman. Ammanford is just eight miles along the A483 from Llandeilo and 5 miles from the end of the M4 on the A483 from Pont Abraham

You can usually find somewhere to park at Pontaman Near Tout’s garage a footpath/cycleway runs the length of the river making the whole stretch easily accessible on the north bank.Tthis path starts on the opposite side of the river to Tout’s garage, cross the bridge up towards Ammanford and you will see the entrance on the right.

There is ample parking dotted around the river the topmost being the bowls club car park near the new school Ysgol y Bedol, take the A 474 towards Glanamman at 0.9 miles there may be room to park on the grass verge on the right – there is a public footpath which leads down to the river and footbridge.At a further 0.7 miles there is an overgrown track/lane on the left which leads to the railway, you can park here, cross the railway and across a field to the river.A further 0.3 miles brings you to Grenig square and the clubhouse to the right – turn right here to park behind the club – walk down Penpound lane opposite to bring you to the river (access upstream of the bridge is now on the South side)use the gate to the left of the bridge to go downstream or cross the bridge and join the riverside path downstream.

Half a mile again from the club you can turn left (signposted for the hospital), cross the railway and park near a green factory building to access the bottom of the public waters about 200 yards from the A474.

Continue up the A474 for about a mile and turn left down upper station road cross the river and turn left opposite the school and you come to the bowls club car park (about 0.2 miles)- this is basically the end of fishable Aman waters.

The Aman has good brown trout stocks, runs of sizeable sea trout from mid summer onwards and goods runs of salmon towards the tail end of the season (season ends on October 17th) the average size being 8lb but more double figure fish are now being caught.

The Aman is a typical flash spate river with water rising dramatically during extended periods of rain and falling soon afterwards.The riverbed is mostly sizeable stones and boulders making even seemingly shallow runs good holding places for the hardy Aman brown trout and ideal for rewarding and exciting downstream wet fly fishing.

Because of the nature of the river bed be prepared to lose tackle when bait fishing – which is probably why most salmon fall to the spinner
